Using Books in Print to find Choice Reviews

We talked about using Books in Print and Choice at last week's NST meeting, and I volunteered to write up what I know about using the online Books in Print to find books which have been reviewed in Choice.

Not only can you *search* by Choice reviews & subjects, you can be*alerted* when new books meet your criteria!! And it's pretty easy to set up:

• Go to the Advanced Search .
• In the first box, click the pull-down & select "Review Source" as the field.
• Type in Choice in the search box.
• Add as many other fields as you like, or none at all to see *all* books in print with Choice Reviews.


• Note: you may want to limit by date=2005-2006 so you don't get too many results!

I did a search for "Keyword in Subject" = Marketing + "ReviewSource" = Choice, and did not limit by year, but made sure that "SortResults by Date" was clicked on . I got 625 results, ofwhich the first is a title to be published in May 2006, and the nextseveral were published in Dec. 2005.

I clicked on the second title, called "Fair Trade: Market-DrivenEthical Consumption". The first screen shows general bibliographicinformation, but it you click on the yellow "Title Reviews" tab,you'll see a review from the Jan. 2006 issue of Choice (as well asone from the November 2005 Reference & Research Book News).

To get this search emailed to you when new books meet you searchcriteria, click on the "BIP Alert" button at the top of thescreen. You'll be prompted to create an account with Books in Print online.Once you get your password, go back to the Advanced Search screen &create your search again. At the results page, you'll see a newbutton which says . You'll be asked to login again,and then you can create a name to save your search.At that point, you'll have three options:

1. Have Bowker run your search & notify you when new books match your criteria
2. Indicate if you want to know about books before they arepublished or after publication
3. Indicate how often you'd like to be notified.Otherwise, you can save your search & run it when you'd like, afteryou log in to your BIP account.

The instructions make it seem a bit more complex than it is; I found it relatively simple and I hope you do too!
