Databases that don't work in the VPN

Here is a list of databases known not to work with the VPN:

• American Chemical Society journal articles in pdf do not display properly (URL for pdf continuously redirects. Workaround is to ask users to download html full-text which does load properly.
  
• ARTstor window after clicking "search & browse for images / Launch" is clicked loads as a blank screen rather than a search interface.
  
• InfoTrac databases have a redirect mechanism that doesn't work with VPN. See earlier post for workaround.
  
• International Medieval Bibliography redirects this error: "The page you requested (/login/index.cfm) could not be found."
  
• Naxos. If you click on song to play it, then click "play selections", you get the following error "cannot play back the file. the file format is invalid."
  
• SciFinder is not accessible from the VPN for users on a Mac; the "secure application manager" doesn’t seem to work on the Mac.
  
• Value Line pdfs do not display from within the VPN on a PC; it works fine on a Mac.

Other problems:

• Interlibrary Loan links don't work if you are logged into the VPN and then go to ILL and login using your netID & password. Solution: Log in to Interlibrary Loan in a separate window from the VPN.
  
• Off-campus patrons can't get to any e-resources directly from Homer because they have no option to log into the VPN prior to accessing these resources. (see recently answered askHomer 233489 question Steve Batt forwarded to us). Workaround is to log in to the VPN first and then search Homer.
  
• Off-campus patrons can’t get to any e-resources directly from within Vista. Hard for faculty to create links to articles within databases; harder for off-campus students to access them without an extra series of logging into the VPN and navigating back to Vista after being logged into the VPN.
  
• Some users have reported that they logged in to the VPN but their database doesn't work. It appears that after they logged in, they closed that browser window or opened another - and they were trying to access a database from outside the VPN.
